Mercedes Schlapp has no easy task in her position in the role of White House adviser for strategic communications. She must contend with the president, who acts as his own director of communications as well as numerous legal fights which could disrupt the administration's messaging strategy and Cabinet secretaries ensnared in their own controversies. But through it all Schlapp remains focussed on the task that she has been assigned, and is working closely with the White House's policy and legislative affairs teams and policy shops as with the larger communications team to coordinate policy rollouts. Her focus to date has been on topics such as school safety and the opioid crisis, trade, infrastructure and other related topics. As a director, she does not have contact with many media. The month of March was when she received some interest after her name came up as a possible candidate for the job of succeeding Hope Hicks in the role of director of communications. This fight was ugly. Schlapp's allies fought with Tony Sayegh over the media. Schlapp made a call to Sayegh when The Washington Examiner printed a bad story on the former president.
